Garage Door Won’t Close? A Safe Troubleshooting Guide

Start by deciding whether it is safe to test

Keep people, pets, vehicles, and stored items away from the opening before operating the door. Do not loosen, remove, or adjust springs, bottom brackets, lift cables, drums, or other components under tension. A garage door may look stationary while its spring system is storing enough energy to cause a serious injury.

Stop testing if the door is crooked, has come out of a track, has a loose or broken cable, has a visible spring gap, falls when disconnected, or makes a violent movement. Close off the area and contact a trained garage door technician.

Check the simple causes first

  • Confirm that the opener has power and that a wall control lock or vacation mode is not active.
  • Look for an object, packed snow, debris, or a damaged weather seal in the door’s path.
  • Clean the photoelectric sensor lenses gently and make sure both sensors are firmly mounted and aimed at each other.
  • Try the interior wall control. If it works but a remote does not, check the remote battery and use the manufacturer’s model-specific programming instructions.
  • Read the opener’s diagnostic lights or display, then consult the manual for the exact model. Codes and adjustment procedures are not universal.

Understand what reversal can mean

Modern automatic openers use entrapment-protection features. A blocked or misaligned external sensor can keep a door from closing, while an opener may also reverse if it senses unusual resistance. Bypassing a safety device is not a repair.

If a door closes only while the wall button is continuously held, a safety-sensor problem is a common possibility, but the correct diagnosis still depends on the make, model, wiring, lights, and condition of the door. Do not permanently defeat the sensor circuit.

When to call a garage door company

  • A spring, cable, roller, hinge, track, bracket, or door section is visibly damaged.
  • The door is unusually heavy, uneven, noisy, or difficult to move by hand.
  • The opener rail, mounting points, or door arm is loose or damaged.
  • Sensors will not align or the manufacturer’s documented checks do not resolve the fault.
  • The repair requires force adjustments, internal electrical work, or tensioned hardware.

What to tell the technician

Record the opener brand and model, the diagnostic light pattern or code, what happens when the wall control is pressed, whether the door moves by hand, and any event that preceded the problem. Photos taken from a safe distance can also help a company prepare for the visit.
